5 Tips to Keep Your Lawn Green in the Texas Heat

Green healthy lawn in summer heat in Garland TX

North Texas summers are brutal on grass. Weeks over 100°, clay soil that bakes hard, and water restrictions — and yet some lawns in Garland and Rockwall stay green clear through August. It’s not luck. Here’s what those homeowners (and our crew) do differently.

1. Water deep, not often

Daily light watering trains roots to stay shallow — right where the heat kills them. Instead, water deeply 2–3 times a week, early in the morning (before 8 AM), so moisture soaks down and roots chase it. Deep roots are what keep a lawn alive in July. Check your city’s watering schedule; most east DFW cities restrict days and times in summer.

2. Raise your mowing height

The #1 summer mistake we see: mowing too short. Taller grass shades its own roots and holds moisture. In summer, keep Bermuda around 2 inches and St. Augustine at 3–4 inches. Scalped lawns turn brown in days when it’s 103° out.

3. Never cut more than a third

Cutting more than one-third of the blade at once shocks the grass — and stressed grass in a heat wave doesn’t bounce back. If the lawn got away from you, bring it down over two or three mows, not one. (This is one reason a consistent weekly schedule beats catch-up mowing.)

4. Keep the blade sharp

A dull blade tears grass instead of cutting it. Torn tips turn brown and lose water fast — that whitish haze over a lawn a day after mowing is usually a dull blade, not drought. Sharpen at least twice a season. (Our crew sharpens constantly; it’s half of what “crisp” means in clean lines and crisp edges.)

5. Feed and defend before the stress hits

A lawn full of weeds is a lawn splitting its water bill with intruders. Weed control and proper feeding in spring set up dense turf that shades out weeds and survives summer. Playing catch-up in July is much harder than preventing in April. That’s exactly what our Premium Weed Control program is built for.

The easiest tip: let us handle it
